Eugenia was bubbling with joy when the siren screamed louder, then warbled to a stop out front. The door burst open and paramedics rushed inside. A medic took the baby from Shelly's arms. Then others transferred Shelly to a gurney and wheeled her out of the room. But as it passed, she reached out to clasp Thomas's hand. She didn't speak, but her eyes gleamed her gratitude.

He gave her hand a squeeze. "See you at the hospital, Shel." Then she was carried past him and out of the house.

Thomas turned to study Janella, still unsure what he'd just witnessed. Somehow, in some weird, damn near scary way, Janella had eased Shelly's pain. He knew it without being told. And he could see the effort it had cost her. Exhaustion was written all over her face. "Are you all right?"

She nodded, watching the medics as they bundled Shelly and the baby into the back of the ambulance outside.

I am fine, Thomas. But the baby?"

She looked truly worried. "The baby will be okay. Her lungs are a little underdeveloped, and she's small. She'll need intensive care for a while, but I think she'll be fine in a couple of weeks." He put a hand on her face, pushed her hair away, caught the tear that fell.

She shook her head slowly, staring at him with something like wonder in her eyes.

"Janella, I'm not sure what just happened here, but-"

"What happened here was a miracle, Thomas." Her smile was watery as more tears spilled over. "The baby.... You gave her life. You brought her back. You-"

He closed his eyes to block out the adoration in hers. "I did what I'm trained to do. That's all."

"You cried when she breathed again. I saw you."

"You're hallucinating. And I wasn't talking about what I did. I was talking about what you did. You.... How the hell did you—"

The siren's scream made him stop. "We'll talk about it later. I have to go to the hospital now, Janella. Stay here." Again he ran his hand over her face. "Rest. You look like hell. Are you sure you're okay?"

Instead of answering him, she leaned up and pressed her mouth to his. Her eyes fell closed and her hands crept up to encircle his neck. Before he thought better of it, Thomas wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her against him, bending to kiss her. God, she tasted good. And when she drew away, he was shaking. Why the hell was he shaking?

She took in a shuddering breath, released it slowly. "Go. Go and take care of Shelly and her child." She bit her lip, lowered her eyes.

Damn but he hated to leave her. She seemed incredibly vulnerable right now, weak, tired. Kind of soft and pliable in his arms in a way that made him want to hold her right there all night long. He glanced over Janella's shoulder at a smug-looking redhead. "Take care of her, 'Genia. She's had a rough day."

"So have you by the looks of it, Thomas Duffy.
